The food chain of tells
Live reads run in a strict order. First, betting patterns: how the chips go in — carefully stacked or carelessly splashed — and how this opponent has built pots on this street and every street before it. Second, timing: an instant call usually means a ready-made medium hand or a draw, because there was no decision to make; a long tank that ends in a big bet is real deliberation that ended in real strength. Posture and hands come last, and the classic myth runs backwards: shaking hands are usually relief, not fear — the body releasing the tension of finally being paid. Every tell only shifts the weights on a range. It never overrules the read.
